Overestimated my tolerance for kids behaviours

Hi childfree, on Sunday I went to a birthday party for a 2 year old. Kid was the son of my husband’s cousin. I agreed to go since my husband wanted to introduce me to his extended family as we had a small immediate family only wedding due to the pandemic.

I guess I overestimated my tolerance because it got overwhelming an hour in. I saw a guest ask for a kiss from one of the kids there and he licked her face. It was disgusting. The final straw came when while husband and I were greeting the birthday kid, he sneezed open mouth at us. Fuck my mind blanked out in the moment and I panicked wondering whether anything gross landed on me while trying to pretend to be ok outwardly. Husband took over the pleasantries while I died internally. Once the kid was returned to the minders, I quickly told him this was too much and that I’m bailing and to tell people I’m at the washroom if anyone asks. He covered for my disappearance the rest of the party and kept me informed so I could comeback when it was cake cutting time.

The only saving grace to this farce was that this party was held in an event space attached to an art gallery and admittance was free for us party guests. I spent the rest of the time calming my nerves and exploring the wonderful gallery. I barely got to interact with any of the in laws due to the chaos. I guess I know my limits better now and will staunchly refuse in future if anyone tried to invite me to kids birthday. Never again X.X
